It's been THAT kind of month

I fell into that very common pit-trap of thinking, "There's no point in making a post on here unless you've got the time to really type out everything you want to say," time which, of course, never seems to reveal itself. So I say screw that! Something is always better than nothing.

I will say this to start with: Promotions are great, but only right up until they take away all those extra minutes you normally reserve for better things during the day.

So somehow, against all my expectations about where I might be in two years when I finally get my degree(s), not three weeks after my last post my boss goes and gets herself fired. Unexpectedly, unequivocally, one day gone the next, fired. My rock-steady boss who I love like a second mom, who I thought I would work under until the day I left this job, who I daydreamed about one day needing to find a new assistant that could come close to but not be as awesome as I am for her. And just like that I found myself being handed a promotion and being told that, "for the time being," I would need to do her job and mine until a replacement could be found.

Over a month. That's how long I spent, working overtime nearly every day, struggling and scrambling and doggedly determined not to fuck up and somehow succeeding at doing two jobs at once even though it should have been impossible. In a matter of a few weeks I had to learn every single in-and-out of my former boss' responsibilities, every deadline I was expected to adhere to, every daily task I'd never had to pay attention to before, and take up the mantel of decision making that I'd only ever observed from the sidelines before.

Good god, I was terrified. For a little while at least. I think I can safely say, without too much ego involved, that I did a fucking amazing job. Maybe too good of a job though, because it took over a month before the people who do the hiring and firing finally started doing interviews. And then, hallelujah, my new office assistant started on April 9th.

Of course that would have been too easy I guess? Because our school got slapped with a crazy, once-in-a-lifetime state mandated full district audit with only a month's notice. Less than a month to pull together the most obscure, aged, and in many cases hardest to find information that involved more horrifying memories of digging through 5 years worth of storage and dusty boxes then I want to remember. What better thing than to have a new co-worker to train to do your job while simultaneously running a department AND handling gathering information for the craziest audit in the history of all audits?

Oh yeah, and there was school too. But that's the one area I have no complaints in. Except that with great disappointment (and not a little bit of anger) I dropped my Calculus class when the glaring stupidity and appalling laziness of my teacher had me shooting lasers from my eyes so hard that I was becoming a traffic hazard on the way home after class. I'm still working on the scathing, brutally honest review of her abominable teaching methods that I plan to submit to the head of the math department. And this, REALLY is exactly why I want to be a math teacher. Because its no wonder our education system is falling apart with people like that running a university level math course.

Damn, I seem to have more pent up anger to feed on than I thought I did regarding that whole debacle. But it's in the past and I'm already registered for my summer Calculus class, which coincidentally begins just one day after my Chemistry final. I swear I'm not a masochist, my school just seems to delight in torturing their students. Oh, and the kicker? For the first time in never, my work is adjusting their summer hours so the office is closed on Friday, but telling everyone to work 10 hours each day the other four, which means that for me to leave on time to get to my 5:30pm class I need to come in every day at 7am. Shoot me now. Seriously. It's that or my headstone's going to read, "Here lies Marissa - Worked to Death".

No promises, but I'll attempt to make the next post more cheerful. Blarg.

Hello world

It's stupidly late but I've finally mustered enough presence of mind to get myself on here to let everyone know that I'm not dead, missing, or that I've forgotten about my LJ and everything I've been working at on here.

It's been a trying last two months, and though it was originally school and making sure that I passed my classes with exemplary grades that took me away from writing and updating, it also quickly became battles with work, a cold, Thanksgiving vacation, then a flu, then Christmas vacation, and now pneumonia. I'll never regret finally hauling myself to the doctor after spending a week coughing every few minutes and being short of breath, and thankfully I'm out of the worst with just a day left on my antibiotics. Still... not something I wish to repeat anytime soon!

Now that I'm on the mend, hopefully for awhile to come, I'm extremely grateful for all the comments and support and continued interest from everyone. Even if I've been remiss with updating or having trouble thinking clearly through all the fevers I've been enduring lately. I've got my cheerleader on hand and I'm feeling good about knocking out the last few editing updates and then finally getting the sequel for Post Hoc out for public consumption.

And though school does start in exactly a week, the start of a new semester hasn't managed to stop me from writing yet! I think, really, it's just the pure joy of knowing that I'm going to get back to doing what I love to do, with a clear head and without all this mess popping up around me, that's got me excited the most. Oh and sharing my wealth of crazy imaginings with all of you :D

P.S. I marathoned all 8 Harry Potter movies over the Christmas break in 24 hours and it put me severely in the mood for Slytherin!Harry stories, which of course sent me down the slippery slope of Harry/Draco, and now I need recs! Hit me with everything you've got :]

Just got home

Took out my girl zukkii tonight for some awesome food and awesome company (me!) to celebrate her move to Japan this Sunday. There was bookstore wandering, excessive spending, great food, killer margaritas (literally!), and more excessive spending at Walgreens afterwards. Apparently I lose all reservations about spending money when I'm drunk? Haha.

There will be breakfast/brunch tomorrow morning and then I will have to send off another ex-roomie who's making her way to Japan. That's 2-0 for me now! Anyone looking to move to Japan and want to live with me to increase their odds? (I kid, I kid...)

I completely missed my deadline for posting the next chapter of Post Hoc tonight but it will definitely get posted before this weekend is over. Hopefully tomorrow, possibly Sunday morning. I've got a concert to go to Sunday evening at the Houston Symphony so whatever happens it's going to be up before that. I'm seriously debating on just moving the update day of the week to Sunday, though it's hard to say whether these last two times were just bad timing or a growing trend...

Either way, look for an update this weekend!

P.S. DENNYS!!

Pps. photolover was there too but he only here a mention now because he was whining at me about being left out over breakfast :P

Post hoc - Chapter Twelve link

Well I got as far as I could last night, but when I woke up in my chair after falling asleep in front of the computer around 1 in the morning I knew I wasn't going to get this done when I'd planned to. But I've had a restful lie-in and was able to finish up in a few hours, so a little late is better than nothing :)

Progress update

Working furiously!! But no promises of an update before midnight. The wee early hours of the morning are looking more likely at the moment XD;

Back to work!

yeah I'm guilty of poor time management :(

No the eyes are not deceiving, I really didn't post anything this weekend like I was hoping to. I'm a little ticked at myself for breaking such a good track record, but I think I've simply underestimated up until now how much real life can get in the way unless I plan better. I've got nothing even half decent to share yet for chapter 12, so I'm just going to call this a week postponement and put the chapter up on Friday instead. I know realistically I could even have it ready by tomorrow (or not!) but at this point I'd rather stick with my existing schedule then go way off course. I am awfully sorry I want able to have it done when I should have, but at this point its just another learning experience when it comes to balancing class, writing, work, and friends.

Not the best news, but...

I've decided that instead of stressing out over completing a rush job to get this next chapter of Post Hoc out, I'm simply going to postpone it for a day. This week has been busy and crazy (two tests back to back) and I haven't had the time to do a single thing to get twelve ready for posting. The worst part too is that I've known for awhile that this was going to be one if my more problematic chapters to finish, so of course the week it fell to post on turned out to be one of my worst for free time :( Since I have no class tonight I'm confident I can dedicate today and any part of tomorrow I need to finishing it up. Unfortunately for you guys that means you'll have to wait an extra day, sorry ^^ But quality over quantity right?

Just wanted to get the word out in case anyone actually notices the absence of a chapter update today XD

Post hoc - Chapter Eleven link

I swear I paid my internet bill on time, so I can only assume that it was down all evening because some moron on their end tripped over a plug or something >_<

I'll also be getting around to answering comments and emails this weekend. I made a few attempts during the week but I'm beginning to learn that in the battle of LJ vs School and Work, LJ ends up losing every time. Blah.
